Riveting Old Holes

This week we put lots of rivets into old holes and sealed the exterior skin from the inside. Maya and Ben both learned to use a rivet gun. Ben was particularly thrilled to use something called a "gun" with a trigger. Maya has been my stalwart helper from the beginning and has had her hand in nearly everything (if only for a few minutes each time).

The grey lines are mine - the Trempro 635 sealing leaks.  If you click on the images above, you can see them better. The black lines are seam-sealer from the Airstream factory in 1963, most of it still seals well, but not all of it. In order to find the leaks, my daughter sprayed the Airstream down from the outside while I marked the inside with a marker.  I may have gone a little overboard with the caulk, but it is cheap and I only get one shot at this.  Once the walls are back on it will be another 50 years before this happens again.

I'm not an Airstream Jedi, yet.  Airstream Jedi would have sounded presumptuous, like I know what I'm doing. That couldn't be further from the truth. Padawan is a title I can hope to live up to.
